Interior Enforcement of Undocumented Immigration
Sarah Bohn and Magnus Lofstrom

The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 included measures to deter the employment of undocumented immigrants, but these measures have not been well enforced. Some states have created their own interior enforcement mechanisms, such as the Legal Arizona Workers Act, arguably the most comprehensive of state efforts. This study is examining the effectiveness of federal and state interior enforcement efforts, including the mandated use of the federal government’s online employment verification system. The study will be among the first to inform policymakers about the effects of their interior enforcement efforts and will help California policymakers decide whether policies similar to Arizona’s should be adopted.
