Poverty across California, 2023

This data set contains information on poverty from the first quarter of 2023 for all of California’s counties, congressional districts, state senate districts, and state assembly districts, calculated according to the California Poverty Measure (CPM).

The data set includes poverty and child poverty rates, a representative poverty threshold, and estimates of poverty in the absence of major safety net programs, according to the CPM. The CPM is based on calculations from the California samples of the American Community Survey, along with a number of other auxiliary data sources. The CPM is a joint research effort between PPIC and the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality that, unlike the official poverty measure developed by the US Census Bureau, takes into account the cost of living and resources from social safety net programs.
