TITLE: Immigrants and Immigration: The Multidimensionality of Public Opinion

AUTHORS: Max Neiman and Douglas Strand

PAGES: 29      DATE: May 2006

ABSTRACT: Based on a Kaiser Family 2004 survey on immigration issues, this study explores the multidimensionality of public opinion concerning immigrants and immigration. The report demonstrates the usefulness of exploring the different issues that individuals bring to bear when assessing immigrants and their effects on American society. The study employs factor analysis to demonstrate that survey respondents were primarily concerned about five factors: immigration burdens, civic engagement, security, culture, and quality. The analysis also suggests that anti-immigrant or negative views regarding immigrants and immigration are related to political philosophy, age, and education.
