The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank. We are dedicated to informing and improving public policy in California through independent, objective, nonpartisan research.
We believe in the power of good information to build a brighter future for the state. We are committed to providing high-quality research and analysis. And we encourage civil, productive dialogue that inspires sustainable policy solutions in Sacramento and around the state.
Our nonpartisan, data-driven approach is at the center of all we do. We pride ourselves on the independence and rigor of our carefully peer-reviewed work. And even when our findings are unexpected or controversial, we believe in letting the facts speak for themselves.
Our mission, vision, and values inform our organizational choices and staff activities.
PPIC delivers actionable, fact-based research to help the state find practical responses to a range of policy challenges.
PPIC houses three policy centers that address topics of major importance to California.
- The PPIC Higher Education Center advances practical solutions that enhance educational opportunities for all of California’s students—improving lives and expanding economic growth across the state.
- The PPIC Statewide Survey provides a voice for the public and likely voters on key policy issues facing the state.
- The PPIC Water Policy Center spurs innovative water management solutions that support a healthy economy, environment, and society.
Our extensive outreach activities bring PPIC’s work to an ever-expanding audience in Sacramento and beyond. Our events feature viewpoints across the political spectrum, promoting constructive, thoughtful, and respectful dialogue on the issues that matter most to California.
Our Research Staff
Our multidisciplinary research staff includes experts in economics, demography, political science, sociology, and environmental resources. The institute expands its research capacity with adjunct fellows and a summer intern program.
Since 1994, PPIC has helped California’s leaders to better understand policy issues by providing them with objective, evidence-based research. PPIC was founded by three exceptional leaders: Roger W. Heyns, former chancellor of University of California, Berkeley; Arjay Miller, former president of Ford Motor Company and former dean of Stanford Business School; and William R. Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard Company. An endowment from William R. Hewlett made their vision of a nonpartisan policy institute possible.
PPIC receives generous support from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
