At the Public Policy Institute of California, we are proud to celebrate a notable milestone: the opening of the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse in downtown Sacramento. This moment is more than the unveiling of a new civic building—it is a tribute to a career defined by integrity, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Tani Cantil-Sakauye has long been a force in California’s legal community. As the first person of color and only the second woman to serve as Chief Justice of California, she broke barriers while strengthening the state’s judicial system. Her tenure was marked not only by steady leadership through complex challenges, but also by a deep belief that the courts must serve—and be understood by—the people.

That belief in access and understanding is one of the many reasons we are so fortunate to now call her a colleague at PPIC. Since joining our organization as President and CEO, Tani has continued to champion civic education, helping Californians better understand how their institutions work and why they matter. She brings the same clarity and sense of purpose to this work as she did to her time on the bench.

The courthouse that now bears her name stands as a fitting symbol of her legacy. It represents fairness, accessibility, and trust in public institutions, values that Tani has advanced throughout her career. But perhaps more importantly, it serves as an inspiration to future generations, reminding them that leadership in public service is both possible and essential.

Those of us who have the privilege of working alongside Tani every day see the qualities that made her such an extraordinary Chief Justice: intellectual rigor, humility, and a genuine warmth that brings people together. Her dedication to our mission—improving policy through independent, objective, nonpartisan research—is steadfast and inspiring.

We congratulate Tani on this well-deserved honor and celebrate the opening of a courthouse that will serve Californians for decades to come. It is a tribute not just to a distinguished career, but to a lasting commitment to justice and civic life.
