High dropout rates and low student achievement top the list of concerns. Most Californians are very concerned that the state’s budget gap will cause significant cuts in education, the area they most want to protect from such cuts. Support for the high school exit exam is higher among those with just a high school diploma than among those who have attended or graduated from college. Six in 10 Californians are concerned about having enough money to pay their rent or mortgage. Californians are highly supportive (65%) of the $800 billion federal economic stimulus package, but are divided (46% approve, 46% disapprove) about the government’s giving money to banks and other financial institutions. Statewide Survey PPIC Statewide Survey: Californians and the Future By Mark Baldassare, Renatta DeFever, Lunna Lopes, Dean Bonner Dec 1, 2014 Some findings of the current survey: While many Californians believe the state will be a better place to live in 2025, most (55%) think that today’s children will be worse off financially than their parents. A solid majority of Californians think that state and local governments are not doing enough to respond to the current drought. Californians are divided along party lines about extending the Proposition 30 tax increases, but there is bipartisan support for raising taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. Most Californians think the state is not adequately funding public colleges and universities—but few favor paying higher taxes or increasing student fees.
