Some findings of the current survey:

  • Solid majorities of Californians favor government regulation of greenhouse gas emissions and policies to curb global warming.
  • More Californians support than oppose expanding coastal oil drilling; even more favor improving fuel efficiency.
  • Three in four Californians say the state should expand public transit and use existing transportation networks more efficiently—only 18 percent say the state should build more freeways.

Some findings of the current survey:

  • Four in ten Californians say they will not be affected much by health care reform. About a quarter think they will be better off and a similar share think they will be worse off.
  • Half of Californians support the state government’s plan to ease prison overcrowding; most are concerned about the possible early release of prisoners.
  • There is overwhelming support for regulations requiring oil companies to obtain permits and disclose information on chemicals used in fracking and other oil extraction methods.
  • For the first time, a majority of Californians say marijuana use should be legal.

  • Opposition to offshore drilling has jumped 16 percent since last year.
  • A slim majority say state action is needed right away to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Among likely voters, Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman are about even in the race for governor, with 23 percent undecided.
  • Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina are also in a close contest for the U.S. Senate, with 22 percent undecided.

Some findings of the current survey:

  • Californians give high grades to their public higher education systems but are worried about increased student costs and state budget cuts.
  • State leaders get record low approval ratings for their handling of higher education: 21 percent for Governor Schwarzenegger and 16 percent for the state legislature.
  • Sixty-seven percent of Latino parents of children aged 18 or younger are very worried about being able to afford a college education, while 38 percent of white parents say the same.

  • The share of Californians with broadband is up 7 points since last year, with Internet use increasing by 6 points, and Internet access at home by 4 points.
  • A large majority of Californians, 83 percent, believe access to high-speed broadband is important, including 76 percent without broadband themselves.
  • Latinos in California still lag well behind whites, blacks, and Asians in measures such as broadband adoption.

  • The share of Californians using a cell phone to access the Internet has doubled in three years, from 19 to 40 percent.
  • Surfing the web via cell phone is up for all racial and ethnic groups.
  • Forty-one percent of residents in the San Francisco Bay Area use cell phones to work remotely; 31 percent in Los Angeles and 24 percent in the Central Valley do so.
