PPIC’s latest survey looks at Californians’ opinions and policy preferences on climate change, water, energy, and coastal issues. It also examines the role of the environment in the upcoming gubernatorial and US Senate elections. PPIC researcher Alyssa Dykman will outline these and other key findings.

Some findings of the current survey:

  • Two-thirds of Californians would pay higher taxes to avoid cuts in K–12 funding.
  • Seventy percent support spending cuts in prisons and corrections.
  • Tom Campbell is ahead in the Senate primary race among Republican likely voters.
  • Meg Whitman’s lead grows in the primary race for governor.

Statewide Survey: Californians and Their Government

A majority of California likely voters favor Democratic candidates in US House races; half say this election is more important to them than past midterms. Gavin Newsom and Dianne Feinstein have double-digit leads in their respective races. Proposition 6 and Proposition 10 are both trailing. PPIC researcher Dean Bonner outlined these and other key findings at a briefing in Sacramento.

Key findings from the current survey: In California’s gubernatorial race, Democrat Gavin Newsom solidifies his lead and Republican John Cox gains ground—but a quarter of likely voters are still undecided. In the US Senate race, Dianne Feinstein continues to lead Kevin de León by double digits. Immigration is the top issue likely voters want to hear gubernatorial candidates talk about between now and the June primary. Most likely voters would support state bonds for affordable housing and water infrastructure projects.
