Police Use of Force and Misconduct in California

Nearly 200 Californians die each year in police encounters. Amid growing concern over civilian deaths and racial injustice, we examine what the existing data can—and cannot—tell us about police use of force and misconduct. We also offer recommendations for strengthening the state’s ongoing efforts to improve police transparency and accountability.

Women in California’s Legislature

100 years ago, California elected the first female members of the state legislature. Today, women play a powerful role in shaping the political discourse but they continue to be underrepresented in government. Senate President pro Tem Toni Atkins will join PPIC President and CEO Mark Baldassare for a wide-ranging conversation about leadership in changing times. Then a panel of current and former legislators will share their experiences and discuss the dynamics of diversity in setting better policy for the state.
