New Leadership at PPIC

Fifteen years ago, I became president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California. From the governors’ recall elections to the Great Recession to the pandemic to the events of January 6, these have been tumultuous times for our state and nation. Never have policy choices felt so real and so consequential. It has been my honor to lead this valued and trusted research organization during these critical years.

I recently informed the PPIC Board of Directors of my intention to turn over the helm at the end of December 2022. Our organization has never been stronger. Our nonpartisan research is timely and relevant. Our financial resources are solid. Our relationships with policymakers and the community are broad and deep. It is time for me to pursue my other professional interests, and my talented colleagues at PPIC are well positioned to make a successful transition to new leadership.

Over the years, PPIC has become a leader in identifying and addressing a wide range of pressing issues facing our state. The PPIC Statewide Survey provides a voice for the public and likely voters. Our convenings inspire constructive, forward-looking conversations among leaders and community members across the political spectrum.

I would like to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for the many people behind PPIC’s success. I have been fortunate to work with an extraordinary group of colleagues at PPIC, and I am forever thankful for their hard work and many contributions. The members of PPIC’s board of directors have provided invaluable vision, dedication, and support for our nonpartisan mission. The PPIC Statewide Leadership Council and other advisory groups have helped ensure the institute’s relevance, expand its reach, and increase its impact. Numerous foundations, organizations, and individuals have provided generous support. We could not do our important work without all of you.

In the weeks ahead, the PPIC Board of Directors will launch a search for my successor. Board Chair Steven Merksamer will lead this effort. You will hear from him shortly about that process and timeline.

Throughout this year, I remain committed to fulfilling our ambitious goals and ensuring a smooth transition to new leadership. As for the future, I will be pursuing a variety of new projects, including writing a book on California’s direct democracy system. And I remain committed to working together towards a brighter future for our Golden State.
