Health Coverage and Care for Undocumented Immigrants

About the Program
California's undocumented population makes up a sizable share of California residents without health insurance. Half would likely qualify for full Medi-Cal benefits should coverage be extended. PPIC researchers Iwunze Ugo and Shannon McConville will provide a look at new estimates of the size and income levels of this population across California regions.

Statewide Survey: Californians and the Future

About the Program
PPIC's latest survey looks at Californians' views of the future of their state—both near– and long–term. It touches on the post–election landscape, including the state budget and water policy. It also examines opinions on tax extensions, health care, higher education, and climate change. PPIC associate survey director Dean Bonner will highlight the findings, followed by a wide-ranging panel discussion on the most pressing issues facing the Golden State.

The survey was funded by the Blue Shield of California Foundation, the California Postsecondary Education Commission Foundation, The San Francisco Foundation, and the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.

Child Poverty and the Social Safety Net in California

About the Program
More than one in five California children live in poverty, and many more would be poor without the social safety net. The rate of poverty varies widely by region. PPIC researcher Sarah Bohn will describe the factors that contribute to these regional differences in child poverty.

Health Workforce Needs in California

About the Program
Already a large part of California’s economy, the state’s health workforce will need to grow significantly over the next decade to keep up with a growing—and aging—population. PPIC researcher Shannon McConville will present new findings about California’s health workforce needs. A panel of experts will then discuss how the state can increase the number of health care workers and offer career opportunities to a diverse group of Californians.

Now that the Affordable Care Act has expanded Medi-Cal eligibility, California’s county jail systems could become enrollment sites for their high-need, hard-to-reach populations. PPIC researcher Mia Bird will discuss the role of jail systems as health care providers and the potential benefits of enrolling inmates in health insurance coverage.

How many Californians are poor, and how effectively does the social safety net address need? Research fellow Caroline Danielson introduces a new measure that reassesses the depth and breadth of economic hardship and highlights the impact of programs that alleviate poverty in California.
