PPIC Water Potentially Available for Recharge, 2017 and 2023
This spreadsheet contains data, sources, and methods used in the June 2025 report How Much Water Is Available for Groundwater Recharge in the Central Valley? by Ellen Hanak, Spencer Cole, Greg Gartrell, and Caitlin Peterson and the December 2024 blog “Understanding Water Available for Recharge in the Central Valley,” by Ellen Hanak, Greg Gartrell, and Spencer Cole.
This dataset provides estimates of water potentially available for recharge (WPAFR) from the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers during two recent wet years, water years 2017 and 2023. It includes a description of fields included and the approach used to estimate WPAFR and its components.
