The Year Ahead

In so many ways, California is a state of superlatives: it’s our nation’s economic engine, its breadbasket, and its treasure box of natural wonders. As a native Californian, I’ve always been proud of the vast potential of the Golden State.

At the same time, I’m not wearing rose-colored glasses. Our state faces a multitude of challenges—from high poverty and costs of living to natural disasters driven by climate volatility. It’s not surprising that Californians are currently pessimistic and worried about the prospects for future generations.

But in my travels around the state, I’m continually inspired by people working to improve their communities and solve complex problems. How can we help them?

At PPIC, we believe in the power of good information to promote positive, long-lasting change. At a time of great division, we know that providing a common set of facts can help illuminate a path toward constructive dialogue and viable solutions.

After a consequential election, change is underway at the local, state, and national levels. With many new faces in California’s congressional delegation and state legislature, we are committed to providing resources and activities that inform and engage our leaders as they take up the people’s work.

Over the next several months, PPIC will be painting a fact portrait of our state. Through a range of accessible publications—including fact sheets, blog posts, explainers, and videos—we will be sharing what we know about California’s people, economy, and environment—and the programs and policies that support them.

Our events will bring leaders together from across the political spectrum to offer their perspectives in a series of civil, productive conversations that inspire sustainable policy solutions in Sacramento and around the state.

The PPIC Statewide Survey will provide a voice for the public on the issues they care about most—informing policymakers, encouraging discussion, and raising awareness on critical issues of the day.

In addition, we will continue to do the in-depth, path-breaking research that PPIC is known for—on topics ranging from college preparation to the business climate to water management to our aging population.

Finally, we will remain committed to our nonpartisan approach—the cornerstone of our mission and our everyday work. We will let the facts speak for themselves, make recommendations supported by the data, and strive to be accessible to a broad policy audience.

Over time, California has made progress—despite differing views—in tackling some of our biggest and most complex challenges. This is what keeps me optimistic—and excited to lead an organization dedicated to building a brighter future for our state.

I’m always interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas about our work—please continue stay in touch. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year!
